Rob Cornell Honored

Rob has lived with his family his whole life and goes each winter to Florida with them to spend time with his sister and other family.  He has been employed in the Syracuse area at McDonalds for many years working 15 to 20 hours a week wiping tables and restocking condiments with a job coach.  His sister who is Special Events Manager at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, has been encouraging him to participate in a wide variety of fundraising events which he did with great enthusiasm. This year, through his volunteer involvement, he met the C.E.O. of Safeguard Services, Inc. and was asked to work full time at the hospital doing maintenance work.  Rob did this for over two months, taking a bus and train each day to and from work 35 miles away without any formal supports.  He became fully integrated with the maintenance crew doing a variety of tasks, learned the ins and outs of the hospital and taught himself how to navigate the complex bus and train routes.  The head of the maintenance company was so impressed, he offered to have Rob work full time whenever he is in Florida and Rob is now considering moving there permanently.  He received a plaque for his outstanding work and a glowing letter of recommendation.  His family and supports here in Syracuse knew Rob was capable of much more, and he truly showed everyone this by stepping up to the plate and realizing his full potential.
